Typical problems with CNC machined parts

Workpieces made on a CNC milling machine remain the most widely used manufacturing method in industry, despite the many limitations of the technology. One of the reasons is that CNC is the most familiar method of manufacturing parts, but also the most complicated and costly.

In addition, there are several limitations and very well known problems that you certainly know about and can see below.

Ofte må man ganske enkelt starte forfra.

Human error is one of the biggest culprits in CNC milled parts. If the machine operator is not properly trained, or has made a mistake in programming, then the finished quality of the part can be compromised, which is inherently expensive and you are left with an unsatisfactory end result.

Power failure can also be a cause of a CNC machine making errors on a part. The worst is if the error is intermittent, because they can be hard to find. As a CNC machine is quite complex and consists of a very large number of components, it doesn't take much for the machine to fail. That's why maintenance is important, but you don't always get it done.

CNC milling is a complex and lengthy process that is often extremely costly for all companies. It takes a long time to prepare, especially if the subject is very complex. Therefore it requires a high technical know-how and training to operate the CNC machine correctly which is also very costly. In other words, the higher the complexity, the higher the risk that something can go wrong in the manufacturing process.

You are often limited by what shapes and cuts a CNC machine can perform. Depending on the CNC machine, you can often only mill one axis at a time, and you have to manually turn the workpiece to make it ready for the next axis. The more complex CNC machines can cut on as many as 5 axes (X, Y, Z, A, and C axis) but are still limited by the table needing to be accessible.

Something you may not think about as much is that CNC machines are extremely power hungry and leave a lot of material waste when manufacturing parts. Metal chips have to be remelted so that the metal can be recycled, which is hard on the environment and overall leaves a large carbon footprint.

3D Print in metals

CNC MILLING is a thing of the past

If you embrace Istedet technology and make use of the latest developments in the manufacture of metal parts, you will quickly realise that manufacturing parts on CNC machines is a thing of the past.

3D industrial printing is the future and here to stay. Engineers who understand the technology and how 3D printing can be used industrially also know that the technology will outperform CNC machines on several parameters such as:

Uniformity of endless shapes
Higher operational stability than CNC
Unlimited design possibilities
Possibility of more complex topics
Lower costs
Limited need for training and education
Less margin for error
Faster delivery time
Less environment and resource consumption

3D printing is just so much smarter

why 3D printing is the best solution

3D industrial printing is basically all you need if you want high and consistent quality on your parts, higher complexity, faster manufacturing and it's much more fun for the budget.

3D printing is incredibly cost-effective
Manufacturing time is fast
No human involvement required
You get a consistent result every time
Pays better for smaller productions (maximum 100 items)
Tolerances down to 0.1mm
Very strong, as the piece is melted to form the shape you want
Opens up unlimited design possibilities

Achieve serious savings and much faster delivery times

Because you will find that your production becomes more efficient and optimal when you switch to 3D industrial printed parts, which are at least as useful as a CNC milled part.

So there's almost no reason not to get your next item made on an industrial 3D printer

1. If you already have a design
Then we'll be happy to work on it and improve it according to your wishes, now that you've also got access to unlimited designs.
2. We help with the design
If you don't have a 3D model, we'll design it for you free of charge and discuss your needs, wishes and measurements. Here you get your 3D object virtually that you can see in VR or on the computer.
3. 3D Print of prototypes
Once we have a finished 3D model that you have approved and chosen the material, whether it be in metal, titanium, stainless steel, gold, bronze or a third metal, you can choose whether you want a prototype of the part 3D printed in Nylon, ABS or PST, so you can test the part before it is finally printed in metal.
4. Ready to print
Once the model is ready, tested and approved, just press "print" and you will get as many blanks as you need, free of errors and they will be perfectly identical every time we print.
